Oral Cancer Screening in Woodstock, GA

A few minutes that could save your life — included in your regular care.

Why Oral Cancer Screening Matters

Oral cancer affects more than 50,000 people in the U.S. every year. When caught early, it’s highly treatable — but most cases aren’t found until they’ve already progressed, when treatment becomes far more difficult. The good news? A thorough oral cancer screening takes just a few minutes, and we include it as part of your routine exams. It’s just one of the ways we show you how much we care.

What the Screening Looks Like

We perform a visual and tactile examination of your lips, tongue, gums, the floor and roof of your mouth, the inside of your cheeks, and the soft tissues of your throat. We’re looking for unusual lesions, white or red patches, lumps, or any tissue changes that warrant a closer look. We also use the Vizilight screening system to help detect tissue abnormalities that aren’t visible to the naked eye — making the screening more thorough without adding any discomfort or extra time. Less invasive, more accurate, better outcomes.

What Happens If We See Something

If we find something concerning, we’ll talk you through it openly and recommend next steps — which may include a closer look, a referral to a specialist, or a biopsy. Most of the time, what we find turns out to be nothing serious. But on the occasions when it isn’t, catching it early can make all the difference.

What is an oral cancer screening?

An oral cancer screening is a quick, non-invasive examination of the soft tissues of your mouth, throat, and surrounding areas. At Towne Lake Family Dentistry, we use both visual examination and the Vizilight screening system to look for early signs of cancer or precancerous changes. It’s included as part of every routine exam.

How much does an oral cancer screening cost in Woodstock, GA?

For our regular patients, oral cancer screening is included as part of your routine dental care — there’s no separate fee. If you’d like a standalone screening, we offer that as well. Our In-Office Savings Program includes annual advanced oral cancer screenings as part of its Adult and Periodontal Care Programs.

Does an oral cancer screening hurt?

Not at all. The screening is completely painless and non-invasive. We do a careful visual exam, gently feel the soft tissues of your mouth and throat, and use the Vizilight system — none of which causes any discomfort. The whole process takes just a few minutes.

How often should I get screened for oral cancer?

For most adults, an oral cancer screening once a year is sufficient — and it’s automatically included in your annual exam at our office. If you have additional risk factors (tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, HPV, family history), we may recommend more frequent screenings. We’ll tailor the schedule to your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Vizilight and how does it work?

Vizilight is an advanced oral cancer screening system that uses fluorescence technology to help detect tissue abnormalities that aren’t visible during a standard visual exam. It’s quick, completely painless, and significantly improves our ability to catch concerning changes early — when they’re most treatable.

  • Who is at risk for oral cancer?

Risk factors include tobacco use (smoking and smokeless), heavy alcohol use, HPV infection, prolonged sun exposure (for lip cancer), a weakened immune system, and a family history of cancer. That said, oral cancer can occur in anyone — including people with no known risk factors. That’s why regular screening matters.

  • What are the warning signs of oral cancer?

Persistent mouth sores that don’t heal, white or red patches in the mouth, unexplained bleeding, numbness, difficulty chewing or swallowing, a lump or thickening in the cheek, or a feeling that something is caught in your throat. If you notice any of these, call us at 770-591-7929 to get checked out.

  • Will my insurance cover an oral cancer screening?

Coverage varies by plan. Most insurance plans don’t separately reimburse for oral cancer screening, but it’s a routine part of the exam at our office. We’re happy to verify your specific benefits — call us with your insurance details.
