Why Aftercare Matters After a Root Canal

A root canal is designed to remove infected or damaged tissue inside the tooth, relieve discomfort, and help preserve your natural smile. While the treatment itself is important, how you care for your tooth afterward also plays a major role in healing and long-term success.

What to Expect After Treatment

It is normal to have some tenderness after a root canal, especially when chewing or touching the area. This usually improves as the surrounding tissue heals. If we place a temporary filling or restoration, the tooth may feel slightly different until the final restoration is completed.
 

Mild soreness can often be managed with the instructions we provide after your visit. However, worsening pain, swelling, or a bite that feels uneven should be checked by our dental team.
 

Be Careful While Numb

Your mouth may stay numb for several hours after your appointment. During this time, avoid chewing until feeling returns. This helps prevent accidentally biting your cheek, tongue, or lip.
 

Once the numbness wears off, try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth if the treated tooth does not yet have its final crown or restoration.
 

Keep the Area Clean

Good oral hygiene is still important after a root canal. Brush gently around the treated tooth and continue flossing unless we give you different instructions. Keeping the area clean helps reduce bacteria and supports the healing process.
 

A treated tooth still needs the same daily care as your other teeth. Root canal therapy removes the infected tissue inside the tooth, but the outside of the tooth can still develop decay or gum problems without proper care.
 

Protect the Tooth Until It Is Restored

In many cases, a tooth that has had a root canal needs a crown to help protect it from cracking or breaking. This is especially common for back teeth, which handle more chewing pressure.
 

Until your final restoration is placed, avoid foods that could damage the tooth, including:

• Hard candies, ice, or very crunchy snacks
• Sticky foods that could pull at a temporary filling
• Chewing directly on the treated tooth
• Using your teeth to open packages or bite hard objects

Watch for Changes

Most patients recover smoothly after a root canal, but it is important to pay attention to how the tooth feels. Contact us if you notice swelling, severe discomfort, sensitivity that does not improve, or if your temporary filling feels loose or falls out.
 

We would rather check the tooth early than allow a small issue to become more complicated.
 

Stay on Track With Follow-Up Care

Root canal aftercare does not end once the discomfort improves. Completing your follow-up care and final restoration helps seal and protect the tooth. Skipping this step can leave the tooth vulnerable to reinfection, fracture, or future dental problems.
